In Christianity Christmas is the birth of Jesus Christ, which has been the most important festival in Western culture. In 336 AD, the Roman Church began to celebrate the festival on December 25th. After the middle of the 5th century, Christmas as an important festival, has become a church tradition, gradually spread in the East and West Christian church. Due to the different calendars used, the specific dates and activities forms are also different.

During Christmas, people send cards and give each other gifts, they decorate a Christmas tree and have a feast. Christmas has become a public holiday in the Western world and many other places.

So let’s take a look at some special customs in different countries for celebrating Christmas!

Netherlands

In Netherlands, Christmas celebrations are separate from the visit of Sinterklaas!

For most children in The Netherlands, the most important day during December is 5th December, when Sinterklaas brings them their presents!

St. Nicholas' Day is on the 6th December, but the major celebrations are held on the 5th December, St. Nicholas' Eve. The name Santa Claus comes from the name Sinterklaas.

In Dutch tradition, St. Nicholas lives in Madrid, Spain, and every year he chooses a different harbour to arrive in The Netherlands. When Sinterklaas and the black Piets come ashore from the steam boat, all of the local church bells ring in celebration. Sinterklaas, dressed in his red robes, leads a tour through the town, riding a white horse.

On the evening that Sinterklaas arrives in The Netherlands, children leave a shoe out by the fireplace or somewhere specific and sing Sinterklaas songs. They hope that Sinterklaas will come during the night with some presents. They also believe that if they leave some hay and carrots in their shoes for Sinterklaas's horse, they will be left some sweets or small presents. .

The evening of December 5th is called St. Nicholas’ Eve 'Sinterklaasavond' or 'Pakjesavond' (present evening). The children will receive their presents during the evening. There might be a knock at the door and you might find a sack full of presents and sweets in your shoes!

Christmas Day itself is a much quieter day in The Netherlands, with a Church Service and family meal. Sometimes there is a special Christmas Day 'Sunday School' in the afternoon at the church, where the Christmas Story and other traditional stories are told.

On December 25th, the first day of Christmas, they will hold a family party. The whole family gets together for dinner and presents exchange. The 26th is the second day, enjoying leisure time at home with the family, having a brunch or going to the Christmas market.

Armenia

The Armenian Church follows the old Julian calendar, which means the New Year is celebrated before the Armenian Christmas, which is on January 6th. On this day it also celebrates the Epiphany. Epiphany is now mainly the time Churches remember the visit of the Wise Men to Jesus; but some Churches, like the Armenian Apostolic Church, also celebrate the Baptism of Jesus (when he started his adult ministry) on Epiphany.

Some Armenians fast in the week before Christmas. The Christmas Eve meal is called khetum 'Խթում'. It often includes dishes such as rice (with raisins), fish, nevik 'նուիկ' (green chard and chick peas) and yogurt/wheat soup called tanabur 'թանապուր'. Desserts include dried fruits and nuts, rojik/sujukh (whole shelled walnuts threaded on a string and encased in grape jelly), bastukh/tetu lavash (a paper-like dessert made of grape jelly, cornstarch and flour). This lighter menu is designed to ease the stomach off the fast and prepare it for the larger Christmas Day dinner. Children receive presents of fruits, nuts, and other candies from older relatives.

China

In China, only about one percent of people are Christians, so most people only know a few things about Christmas. Because of this, Christmas is only often celebrated in major cities. In these big cities there are Christmas trees, lights and other decorations on the streets and in department stores.

More young people are celebrating Christmas in cities where Christmas parties are becoming popular and it's also a time where young couples give gifts to each other, a bit like Valentine's day.

A tradition that's becoming popular, on Christmas Eve, is giving apples. Many stores have apples wrapped up in colored paper for sale. People give apples on Christmas Eve because in Chinese Christmas Eve is called "Ping'an Ye" (平安夜), meaning peaceful or quiet evening, which has been translated from the carol 'Silent Night'. The word for apple in Mandarin is "píngguǒ" (苹果) which sounds like the word for peace.

Italy

On Christmas, Italians have a custom of children writing (poems) to express their gratitude to their parents for their upbringing during the year. They hide their works for their parents in napkins, under dishes or tablecloths until Christmas dinner. When they finish their big meal, they read it out to them.

During the festival, Italian streets will be decorated with lights, and every household will decorate a "Preseppe". It is mainly a reproduction of the birth of the Baby Jesus. Preseppe's most important features are the infant, the Virgin Mary, Joseph and some straw, which symbolizes Jesus was born in a stable.

Germany

In Germany, Christmas is not only on December 25, but will last more than 40 days, starting from the first Sunday after November 26 to December 24, known as "Advent".

German Christmas is mainly divided into the following stages: from the first Sunday after November 26 to December 24, advent; December 4; Santa Barbara Day. December 6; Santa Claus Day. December 24 to 26; Christmas day. January 6 of next year is The Three Magi Day.

Christmas Eve in Germany is a time for family gatherings, with poultry dishes such as roast goose served at home, celebrate the birth of Jesus in a warmth festive atmosphere filled with candlelight.

On Christmas Eve, German families have a most typical custom to bake Christmas stollen, this is a dried fruit almond cake. It is a long cake coated in white powdered sugar and containing fruit granules. It takes a few weeks to bake. The dried fruit is dipped in wine, then the wine-soaked dried fruit and marzipan are kneaded into the butter dough, which is then baked and covered with a thick layer of white powdered sugar.

Australia

Christmas in Australia is unique. December 25th is summer vacation time there, so the Christmas in Australia is different - bright and warm sunshine, soft beaches. The activities are traditionally held outdoors. One of the most popular activities of Christmas is carols by candlelight. People gather around a candle and sing Christmas carols outside in the evening. The twinkling stars in the night sky will add romantic feeling to this wonderful outdoor concert.

In Australia, where Christmas falls in the heat of summer, Santa is more likely to be seen barreling along on a surfboard in a bunt. If you stroll down any Australian beach on Christmas Morning, you'll find at least one surfer in a Red Santa hat amid the waves.

Kerstvieringen wereldwijd (NL)

Kerstmis in Australië is uniek.
