.March 8, International Women’s Day, reminds us every year of the tireless women who change the world through dedication and perseverance, making life more just, warm, and hopeful. On the eve of this day in 2026, as we celebrate women’s strength and achievements, there was no need for a long search. That person is the widely respected and beloved Inge Drost.
For a long time, it seemed necessary to write about Inge Drost. Yet writing about someone who has devoted most of her conscious life to the Armenian community in the Netherlands is not an easy task. This festive day offered the perfect opportunity to take on that responsibility.
It is especially moving to speak about Inge Drost, a lawyer, activist, and beloved leader of the Armenian community in the Netherlands. For many years she has been a source of inspiration for thousands of Armenians. Her life is a story of dedication and commitment, showing how one woman, overcoming many challenges, can unite a diverse community, defend justice, and instill hope and faith among Armenians in the Netherlands.
Inge’s journey began in the Netherlands. Her first inspiration and teacher was her mother, Ilse Johannes, whose parents were Armenians from Indonesia. Her father was Dutch, but this did not prevent Mrs. Ilse from raising her daughter with Armenian values. Inge learned about the Armenian Genocide during her school years, and this subject left a deep impression on her heart. Since then, she has continued to speak about it on various occasions.
In the 1960s, Ilse Johannes was an active member of the Armenian community in the Netherlands, serving as secretary of a community organization. They regularly published a bulletin in Dutch. Inge learned Armenian and can read and understand it, although she finds it difficult to speak fluently. Until her passing on November 28, 2024, Ilse Johannes remained devoted to her Armenian roots, continued to follow Armenian affairs, and was always supportive of Inge. She was also a member of the Armenian cultural association Abovian.
Inge studied law at Leiden University, one of the most prestigious universities in the Netherlands. The institution is known for its high academic standards and international reputation. There she gained strong legal knowledge and analytical skills, which she later applied both in public service and in community work.
Since her student years, Inge has published numerous articles in the Dutch press on issues concerning Armenians.
Her professional career in the Dutch government lasted nearly 40 years, mainly at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment, where she worked as a legislative lawyer, project leader, and advisor, contributing to the development of social policy.
Community Work
A central part of Inge’s life has been her volunteer work within the Armenian community. She speaks English and French, which enabled her to establish international connections and participate in conferences in Armenia and several European countries.
From 1985 to 1990 and again from 2000 to the present, she has served as secretary of the Armenian cultural association Abovian, dedicating more than four decades to the organization.
Since 2004, she has also been secretary of the Federation of Armenian Organizations in the Netherlands (FAON), actively defending Armenian interests for more than twenty years.
Her husband, Mato Hakhverdyan, director of the Abovian association and president of FAON, has been her close partner in this work.
Inge has also been active in politics. She served as chair of the PvdA party branch in Voorburg, was a member of the party’s national council, and was twice a candidate for the Dutch Parliament’s Second Chamber.
Between 2000 and 2015, she was also a member of a committee handling complaints about sexual harassment, advocating for women’s rights.
Achievements and Recognition
Inge Drost has played an active role in the recognition of the Armenian Genocide in the Netherlands, submitting petitions to parliament and participating in hearings and public discussions.
In 2020, her interview on NPO Radio 1 marking the 105th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide received wide attention.
She has also published articles in the international journal Clingendael Spectator, discussing the recognition of the Armenian Genocide.
In 2015 she participated in parliamentary discussions on the Nagorno-Karabakh issue, presenting historical and political perspectives and calling for peace and justice.
In 2019 she took part in the opening of the “Old Centre Carpet” monument in The Hague, together with Armenian Ambassador Tigran Balayan. The Armenian proverb engraved on the monument—“Water will find its way”—symbolizes the resilience of the Armenian people.
Awards
Inge Drost has been awarded the Mkhitar Gosh Medal of the Republic of Armenia and a certificate of honor from the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for strengthening Armenian-Dutch relations and defending human rights.
Her work includes advocacy for the recognition of the Armenian Genocide, discussions on the Karabakh issue, and initiatives supporting women’s rights.
Today, Inge Drost remains an important figure in the Armenian diaspora in the Netherlands. Her example shows how dedication and perseverance can inspire a community and encourage future generations to preserve their heritage and build a brighter future.

8 maart, Internationale Vrouwendag, herinnert ons elk jaar aan de onvermoeibare vrouwen die met hun toewijding en inzet de wereld veranderen en het leven rechtvaardiger, warmer en hoopvoller maken. Aan de vooravond van deze dag in 2026 was het niet moeilijk om zo’n vrouw te kiezen. Die persoon is Inge Drost.
Het was al lang nodig om over Inge Drost te schrijven. Toch is het niet eenvoudig om te schrijven over iemand die het grootste deel van haar leven heeft gewijd aan de Armeense gemeenschap in Nederland.
Inge Drost is jurist, activist en een gerespecteerde leider binnen de Armeense gemeenschap in Nederland. Al vele jaren is zij een bron van inspiratie voor duizenden Armeniërs. Haar leven laat zien hoe één vrouw, ondanks vele uitdagingen, een diverse gemeenschap kan verenigen, gerechtigheid kan verdedigen en hoop kan geven.
Haar eerste inspiratiebron was haar moeder Ilse Johannes, wier ouders Armeniërs waren uit Indonesië. Hoewel haar vader Nederlander was, voedde Ilse haar dochter op met sterke Armeense waarden. Inge hoorde al tijdens haar schooltijd over de Armeense Genocide, een onderwerp dat een diepe indruk op haar maakte.

Haar professionele loopbaan in de Nederlandse overheid duurde bijna 40 jaar, voornamelijk bij het Ministerie van Sociale Zaken en Werkgelegenheid, waar zij werkte als wetgevingsjurist, projectleider en adviseur.
Gemeenschapswerk
Een belangrijk deel van Inge’s leven is haar vrijwilligerswerk binnen de Armeense gemeenschap.
Van 1985 tot 1990 en opnieuw vanaf 2000 tot heden is zij secretaris van de Armeense culturele vereniging Abovian.
Sinds 2004 is zij ook secretaris van de Federatie van Armeense Organisaties in Nederland (FAON).
Haar echtgenoot Mato Hakhverdyan, directeur van de Abovian-vereniging en voorzitter van FAON, is haar nauwe partner in dit werk.
Inge was ook politiek actief binnen de PvdA, onder andere als voorzitter van de afdeling Voorburg en lid van de nationale partijraad.
Activiteiten en erkenning

On April 15, 2025, a petition (petition) was presented to the parliament's standing committee on foreign affairs (Commissie voor Buitenlandse Zaken), which is the continuation of the consistent work that began with the first meeting in 1987. Many members of the committee were present at the session. Inge has always emphasized collective work and close cooperation with Armenians.
