Զապել կը սկսի Boston քաղաքի մէկ արուարձանին մէջ՝ Զապել Չահասպանեանի՝ տարեց այրիի եւ մեծ մայր, խաղաղ մահէն, որուն անցեալը մեծ մասամբ անծանօթ մնացած էր իր ընտանիքին։ Սակայն երբ պատմութիւնը կը վերադառնայ ժամանակի մէջ՝ դէպի Զապելի մանկութիւնը Օսմանեան Թուրքիոյ մայրամուտի օրերուն, ուր ան վերապրեց 1915-ի Հայոց Ցեղասպանութիւնը եւ գրեթէ սովամահ եղաւ Սուրիական անապատին մէջ, անմոռանալի կերպար մը կը սկսի յայտնուիլ։

Զապելի ճամբորդութիւնը կը ներառէ տարիներ մը Istanbul քաղաքի որբանոցին մէջ, բախտաւոր որդեգրում մը հարուստ հայ ընտանիքի կողմէ, եւ պայմանաւորուած ամուսնութիւն մը հայ մթերավաճառի հետ, որ զինք կը բերէ Ամերիկա, ուր երբեմն ծիծաղելի դարձող յարաբերութիւններն ու իր մղած պայքարները մշտապէս գունաւորուած են իր անցեալի կորսուած աշխարհը։

But as the story shifts back in time to Zabelle's childhood in the waning days of Ottoman Turkey where she survived the 1915 Armenian Genocide and near starvation in the Syrian desert, an unforgettable character begins to emerge. Zabelle's journey encompasses years in an Istanbul orphanage, a fortuitous adoption by a rich Armenian family, and an arranged marriage to an Armenian grocer, who brings her to America where the often comic interactions and battles she wages are forever colored by shadows from the long-lost world of her past.
